Building Resilience and Advancing Veteran Empowerment (BRAVE): A Holistic Framework for Reintegration

Abstract

Military veterans face multidimensional reintegration challenges, including psychological distress, social isolation, and economic instability. The problem is that military veterans face interconnected challenges during their transition to civilian life, including managing persistent psychological conditions such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression, rebuilding supportive social networks disrupted by military service, and overcoming economic barriers like underemployment and poor skill translation, all while redefining their military identity within civilian roles. This structured narrative review, submitted to the Journal of Veterans Studies on May 27, 2025, introduces the Building Resilience and Advancing Veteran Empowerment (BRAVE) Framework, a holistic model that integrates mental health care, social reintegration, and economic stability. The review synthesizes evidence on trauma-informed therapy, peer mentorship, and vocational advancement from 57 peer-reviewed studies published between 2014 and 2024 and identified through MEDLINE, SCOPUS, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar. Findings suggest that coordinated, multidimensional approaches yield more sustainable reintegration outcomes than isolated interventions. BRAVE provides a practical framework to guide policy, program design, and institutional practice. Future work should examine integrating physical health, environmental context, and cultural identity into the framework to support long-term reintegration and veteran well-being.

Evidence Integration Review of Multimodal Interventions for PTSD, Social Reintegration, and Economic Stability in Veterans

Publication Acceptance 06/06/2025

Abstract

Title: Evidence Integration Review of Multimodal Interventions for PTSD, Social Reintegration, and Economic Stability in Veterans

Objective: This Evidence Integration Review evaluates the effectiveness of multimodal interventions targeting physical, psychological, and social outcomes for military veterans. It examines interventions such as mindfulness practices, physical activity programs, social support mechanisms, and employment-focused initiatives to address PTSD, depression, anxiety, and reintegration challenges.

Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted across PsycINFO, MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Web of Science databases for U.S.-based studies published from January 2014 to November 2024. Eligible studies were randomized controlled trials (RCTs), cross-sectional surveys, or qualitative analyses evaluating exercise, mindfulness, or social support interventions. Quantitative synthesis adhered to PRISMA principles using Julius.ai, while qualitative themes were analyzed with ATLAS.ti. Risk of bias was assessed with Cochrane tools.

Results: Forty-one studies involving 7,500 participants were included, encompassing diverse methodologies. Interventions demonstrated significant improvements in PTSD, depression, and social reintegration. Psychological benefits were noted with mindfulness-based and trauma-focused therapies. Social support mechanisms enhanced reintegration outcomes, while physical activity improved resilience and reduced chronic pain. However, high dropout rates, inconsistent adherence, and underrepresentation of female veterans and minorities limited generalizability.

Conclusions: Multimodal interventions effectively improve veterans' well-being but require tailored, inclusive approaches to address systemic barriers and ensure equitable outcomes. Future research should prioritize longitudinal evaluations, technological advancements, and stigma-reduction strategies to enhance intervention accessibility and sustainability.

The Lasting Effects of Tactical Military Demands on Health and Transition
Abstract

Tactical military athletes face significant physical, physiological, and dietary challenges impacting their performance and long-term health. These demands, originating from intense training, extreme environmental conditions, and insufficient nutrition, increase the likelihood of injuries and cognitive decline, which can persist well beyond active service. Research highlights the importance of tailored exercise programs, nutrition plans, and structured sleep regimens in enhancing short-term performance and supporting long-term health outcomes for veterans. A comprehensive, integrated approach within military protocols is essential for effectively maintaining the overall well-being of tactical military athletes, particularly during the critical transition into civilian life.
